Data Is The New

The British Library (London, UK)
Designer, Drupal themer, and front/backend developer

A personal project created for entry into the British Library Labs Awards, Data Is The New comprises three works exploring and experimenting with the British Library's digital collections:

  • 'The British National Bibliography' (BNB) presents bibliographic metadata in the form of an early home computer program
  • 'Glitch images' presents pixel bending designs promoting the British Library's digital collections
  • 'Data tapestry' presents programmatically recreated British Library images and the concept of woven data

Throughout, a range of technologies and approaches are utilised including RDF, SPARQL, Linked Open Data, and programmatic modification of image data. The works are presented in a Drupal site which concurrently serves as a backend for the BNB web app. Therein, a mix of cached and live Linked Open Data is utilised to provide information on publications and authors.
